Question by bap32211: What do you do to avoid procrastination and get work done?

im seriously sick and tired of this. Im a graphic designer and i do pretty good but i think i can do better if i concentrate on my work and stop procrastinating. I tend to go on facebook, play PS3, or some other stuff but do my work. So i am probably going to delete my facebook. What can i do? what do you do to avoid procrastination?

make a schedule, set daily goals and do not allow yourself to get behind, but make sure to make time for having fun as well or you’ll quickly lose interest over-all, which will cause procrastination.

well stop telling yourself you got time left.
that’s the biggest thing about procrastinating
people tend to tell themselves they can put it off a little more.

determine what is the distraction, perhaps caffeine. any other bad habits? eliminate them.

There are a number of things that you can do to beat the procrastination habit. You are taking a good step in modifying your facebook and limiting distractions (as these distractions can lead to procrastination). Anyway to avoid procrastination you can:

    1. Find the area that you are procrastinating on (take note of what you are procrastinating on and what activities you turn to when procrastinating e.g. facebook). One of the first rules to beat a habit is to get some knowledge on it and bring it into the consciousness – which is what you do here.

    2. Take small steps and celebrate your successes. Beating procrastination is hard work and establish realistic deadlines within a realistic timetable.

    3. Break larger projects into smaller projects. This does two things – firstly it means you don’t need a large chunk of time to complete the smaller task, and secondly, you actually get started and get the snowball rolling.

    4. Just start by setting a clear start time. This allows you to break the inertia of inactivity. If starting is difficult see if you can just do 5 minutes (set a timer and just do it). Often once you start you can create your own momentum .

    5. Do first things first. Coming from Stephen Covey’s book and also one of the bedrocks of time management, ensure that you get your most important things done first. Avoid distractions (e.g. facebook) and ensure that incoming tasks are assessed against your most important task which you should be doing at that time.

    6. Don’t be hard on yourself. Reward yourself for your successes. Whether it is a pat on the back or a 5 minute block of facebook (as a small reward). Make a contract with yourself to reward for completion of tasks.

Procrastination is a habit, and by rewarding your small successes at a daily level, you are more likely to supplant procrastination with more effective and successful habits for your graphic design.

    All the best

I don’t know whether it’s going to work for you,
but I use software to help me get things done.

Basically, it works like a timer, but I think
it’s more fun than a traditional timer.

By the way, it’s not free. I honestly don’t know of
    other effective software.
